Over 50 years ago in a land far away I discovered Clay and I chose a path of ceramic art. For the first 25 years I used clay as a roadmap. I developed my skills as a production potter and along the way I discovered that clay had life and I could help bring it out. The last 25 years I spent exploring the clay from the inside out. I developed clay bodies, glazes and applications for decorative wall tile.
I retired in 2023 with the notion of exploring other artistic avenues, drawing and writing. The book I never wrote was titled “Where the glaze Doesn’t Run”. A metaphor for my career challenges. However I still draw. Before I knew it I had come back to my passion. Umami is a culinary term for the fifth taste bud that no one can truly define. I use the term to describe what I know to be as “Clay Taste”. Letting the “clay be the clay”. My work is altered slab construction using alternative firing techniques to add localized reduction to enhance the clay. I use color and mixed media to season the clay tiles.
